Wheelchair-bound Inez Graney and her two older sons, Leon and Butch, take a bizarre road trip through the Mississippi Delta to visit the youngest Graney brother, Raymond, who’s been locked away on death row for eleven years . . . and it could well be their last visit. Going back to Ford County, Mississippi, the setting of his first novel, A Time to Kill, Grisham brings the Graneys and their world to vivid and colorful life, making it abundantly clear why he is our most popular storyteller.

Fetching Raymond A Story from the Ford County Collection edition by John Grisham Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I've come to expect great writing from John Grisham, and he did not disappoint with the short story, "Fetching Raymond." The story is told from a point of view that is rarely considered. The Graney family dynamics are similar to those played out by many American families; but they are vastly different. The description, "dysfunctional" barely scrapes the surface when describing this clan. Reading about the family's actions and reactions to each other makes a great story. While reading, I found I was repelled yet fascinated by the characters, and I just wanted to keep turning the pages to find out what happened next.

I recommend this short story; I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of the short story collection from the book, "A Ford County Story."

Fetching Raymond A Story from the Ford County Collection edition by John Grisham Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I'm not fond of short stories. I don't share Grisham's opposition to the death penalty. He wrote a full length book about a black high school football star who was executed for a crime he didn't commit in Texas. He brought in shortcomings in the Texas appellate system that, at one time or another, actually happened. But he put one thing in there that wasn't and he didn't even need to do it. That was blacks being struck from a prospective jury panel trying a black defendant. John Grisham is an attorney and a great writer. I know he's heard of the case Batson vs Kentucky. I'm proud to say that the appellate system in Texas is a good one an overall the Texas judiciary is good. But, there was one huge lapse where the Chief Justice of the Court of Criminal appeals refused to keep the court open after five to receive a condemned man's final appeal. That did happen. If he had used that alone, I wouldn't have had a problem with it. I am one who believes that even novels need a certain level of plausibility.
Not what I expected from John Grisham. Although very much a Ford County tale, I guess I was anticipating a twist at the end that did not happen. I'm still a Grisham fan however.
Grisham has written a power package Ed novella about three men and their mother who join for one last family gathering at Parchman Penitentiary.
The story is almost funny as the two brother drive their mother to the prison. The two brothers irritate their mother with their stories of Raymond and his bragging about everything that's gone on in his life, especially the legal crews that are working to get him pardoned.
Then Grisham pulls the rug out and you realize what Raymond has been doing all along.
If you don't get a frog in your throat at the outcome you are a better man than I.
Sorry, but it really irritates me when I pay for a book that turns out to be a very short story and it doesn't tell me that before I pay for it. It wasn't a good story. It wasn't an interesting story. It was just a story. But mostly, it was a very very short story and I paid for as if it were a regular book. IRRITATING!
What can I say about "Fetching Raymond" other than it's another of John Grisham's very enjoyable books. It's a very full hearted exploration of the human experience, both good and bad. He seems to have an almost magical understanding of people and what they do in desperation and what they can be convinced to do. In Gresham's Ford County stories, he shows a very tender and compassionate, if not sometime awkward play on the way people are.

Grisham is a writer's writer. He plies his craft with remarkable expertise. I've read everything he's ever published and continue to want more. I've pre-purchased his new book set for release soon. Actually, I made my pre-purchase some time ago because I know I cannot go wrong with one of his books. I highly recommend this for anyone who does not and cannot enjoy a book without the deepest and most full character development, of which Grisham is a master.
I've always given Grisham novels either 4 or 5. This was the most awful novel I've ever read. The book is composed of unsympathetic folks-a truly dysfunctional family. Poor white trash doesn't begin to cover it.

Spoiler alert-All the family does is go to the penitentiary to see a family member lawfully executed and bring his body back to be buried. No suspense, no plot. I'm glad I only spent 99 cents on it.
I have been a John Grisham fan since reading The Firm -- and have most all of his books. He is a master at letting you sit in on someone else's life. He gives you just enough information to make you keep wondering what will come next. In this short story, at first you're not really sure why Raymond's family is fetching him. But then it becomes painfully obvious. Grisham writes so well, you feel like you are riding along in the van with the family. You can feel the heat, see the mother and sons as well as smell the cigarette smoke. It's a short read, but one that makes you think what it must be like to take that drive...and hope you never have to know.
